The organization of the wolf pack
of reading - words
The wolf ( or gray wolf ) is a species of canid that is widespread throughout the world. It is the distant ancestor of the dog. It is a social animal that lives in packs, which are made up of two to twenty members . The wolf pack is subject to a well-established social hierarchy in order to organize life within the troop.
Each wolf has a specific rank. The Alpha pair ranks at the top of the hierarchy, followed by the Beta wolf, then the Gamma wolf, and then the Omega wolf, who ranks lowest. New wolf pups of the year are not affected by this hierarchy, since they are not yet mature.
We invite you to consult this article to discover the role of each member in this structuring.
The Alpha Wolf
The Alpha wolf is the dominant male in the pack. He reigns supreme, along with his female Alpha. These leaders lead the pack and make all decisions related to its survival, movement, hunting, territorial defense, and so on.
Since these leaders occupy a royal position, they enjoy several privileges that distinguish them from other wolves. Notably, they are the first to eat. They occupy the most comfortable dens, where they rest, mate, raise the cubs, and protect them from enemy attacks.
Furthermore, Alpha wolves are the only ones who can reproduce . In particular, the alpha female prevents the other wolves in the pack from multiplying by harassing them. Note that this wolf only has one chance per year to reproduce. Through this, she gives birth to 4 or 8 wolf cubs, after a gestation period of approximately 2 months.
The Alpha wolf represents authority, determination, strength, and loyalty. Therefore, he defends his territory at all costs, alongside his fellow wolves. To better protect the pack and signal to other troops that it rules the territory in question, clan members mark their area with claw marks, feces, urine, or anal secretions. They leave these substances in strategic and visible areas to make them easier for foreign wolves to detect.
This dominant wolf commands the pack with a true leadership attitude. Notably, he walks with his head and tail held high and his ears pointed. In return, the other wolves demonstrate their respect and subservience by adopting the exact opposite posture.

The Beta Wolf
The beta wolf ranks second, directly after the alpha wolf. He acts as a bodyguard to protect the pack in times of danger. He represents the enforcer who ensures that the rules laid down by this dominant wolf to lead the pack are respected.
To fulfill this role, the beta wolf is characterized by a powerful morphology that allows it to protect its clan against intruders and to lead its battles with skill. In addition, it has a louder voice than the alpha wolf. Notably, its howl can last 3 to 4 times longer than the latter. As a result, its cry is used to give momentum to the group's calls.
The Gamma Wolf
The Gamma wolf follows the Beta wolf and ranks third. It deploys its instinctive abilities to monitor suspicious movements and protect the territory from potential dangers. It constantly monitors the territory to warn the Beta and Alpha wolves of any threats, while preserving the order of the hierarchy and rules within the clan.
The Omega Wolf
The Omega Wolf wears the role of whipping boy or outlet, absorbing the tensions and hostilities that arise between members of the pack. He throws himself between the enraged wolves to stop their fighting and vent their anger. His mission is to restore balance to the pack and bring serenity.
It is recognized by its distinguished morphology: a flattened coat and lowered ears which describe the status of this wolf.

Merci.
